One of the worlds great Capitals, Athens is home to the Parthanon and a host of Classical, Roman, Byzantine & other monuments reflecting its long & important history, but this exciting city is much more than the Acropolis & worth an extra day or more before heading out to the mainland sites & islands.
What to see Our walking tours with Licensed guides & Essential Athens & Sounio tour which also visits the clifftop Temple of Poseidon cover all the central sites in a half or full day. However if you’ve been there & done that & want something different why not let one of our tour leaders show you Athens ‘off the beaten track‘ as only they know it, learn about the rich food culture with our half day Gastronomy tour or try a tour & tasting experience at one of the local boutique wineries.
Tipps The local metro is clean, efficient & will get you around easily. Use it to visit Monisteraki square with its market area & roam the bourgonvillia bedecked small charming streets of the Plaka. A stop at the ‘Acropoli’ metro station will put you onto the pedestrianized path connecting many of the monuments for a great evenings walk, & around the corner you’ll find the Acropolis & museum. Don’t neglect the many other museums with the newly renovated & extensive National Archeological Museum & smaller but outstanding Cycladic Art Museum high on our list.
Dont miss the simple pleasures of life. Try a cold coffee ‘Freddo‘ in the shade as you watch the people pass by or the wonderful varieties of ‘Mezethes’ (many small dishes) the typical lunchtime cuisine. Athens comes alive in the evening & is at its most beautiful so don’t miss the pleasure of a simple stroll to the local bakery & enjoy the sights & sounds of this vibrant city & its people.
