When you visit Delphi you visit the center of the ancient world as designated by Zeus, home to the omphalos stone, Pythian athletic games, and center of worship. A thousand years before the classical Greek period, there was an oracle at Delphi which continued to function up until around the 4th century AD, a period of around 2000 years. Not surprisingly, its mythology & history is immense.
What to see Set high on the forested slopes of Mt Parnassus with amazing views to the deep valley below & clifftops above the natural beauty of Delphi alone is wonderful. Luckily for us, as with olympia, landslides of previous centuries had covered & protected much of the classical remains for us to see. These include the 4th century BC temple of Apollo from where the Oracle spoke her prophesies, the Castilian spring of Mythology, Temples of Athena, Gymnasium, Stadium and treasury buildings. You will also enjoy the modern on site museum dedicated to the finds which adorned the temples & streets of the ancient city with outstanding pieces such as the Naxos Sphynx, the twin Kouroi and famous Bronze Charioteer.
Worth a visit is the nearby charming village of Arachova & its many local craft shops to soak up the mountain scenery over lunch and the local town of Delphi just around the corner (walkable) from the Archeological site.
Tips Private guiding for the site & museum can take around three hours & is well worth the extra expense. The history & influence of Delphi and its mythology is so extensive that having that brought to life by an expert just adds so much to your experience.
